Marketing Begins With Letting Enough People

Know About You and How You Can Help Them.

Everyone Wants More Exposure. These Are My Favourite Ways to Get It.

I am not aware of one business owner that doesn’t want more people to know about his or her business. Gaining exposure is the first step in getting new customers and it is the reason why the advertising industry is one of the most lucrative in the world.

How you decide to market your business depends on what you sell, who you sell it to and your own personality. This means that you need to get your message in front of your customers where they hang out and when they have time to pay attention to what you have to say.

The one question that you should ask yourself is…

Are You Visible?

The fact is that people research all major purchases through two primary sources. The first is through their network of friends, colleagues and acquaintances. In the past, the size of your rolodex definitely did determine the size of your client base. That is why professionals would spend hours and hours networking and schmoozing. In fact, many still do.

The Internet is the other source that more and more people are turning to for researching your products and services. It only makes sense. People can find the information they’re looking for when they have time to give it proper attention. They also know that they will not be pressured to buy anything from a website.

The key is to be present on both fronts.  You ensure referral business by keeping your current clients happy and making it easier for them to recommend you (see the Increasing Life Time Value section).  You become more visible online by using the methods above.  Click through the topics to learn more about each.

The conversion portion of the formula is my personal favourite. The reason is that small improvements in conversion have MASSIVE effects on profitability.

What I mean by that is simple. Chances are that you are spending money to get people to your website. Each visitor either becomes a sales lead for you or they don’t. And let’s face it, the vast majority don’t. That’s the nature of marketing.

Either way, there is a cost associated with getting each visitor. If one in 50 vistors to your site become a sales lead your website has a 2% conversion rate. However, let’s say that you make some changes to your site and suddenly your conversion jumps up to 5%. Assuming that your costs for getting visitors remains the same the profitability of your site will improve by 250%.

These numbers are just examples but the principle is sound. Small improvements in the conversion of your website result in leaps in revenue and profitability.
